I'm David. I spent years shooting food for a living — lugging lights into kitchens, styling plates, chasing the one frame that made a dish look as good as it tasted. The work was good. The problem was the people I had to turn down.
The small places — the neighbourhood pizzeria, the one-van kebab shop, the café with six tables — needed great photos more than anyone, and could afford them least. A shoot costs hundreds, takes days, and only covers a handful of dishes. So they'd put flat phone snaps on Wolt and Uber Eats and quietly lose orders to the chain down the road with a proper photographer on retainer.
PlateRefresh is my answer to that. It takes the photo you already shot on your phone and relights and lightly refines it — proper light, clean surface, true colour, crisper texture — in about thirty seconds, for every dish on your menu. It does the one thing a shoot can't: cover everything you sell, consistently, for the price of a coffee.
The one rule I won't break: it has to be your real food. We relight and lightly refine the dish you cooked. We never generate fake food, and we never add an ingredient that wasn't on the plate.
That rule isn't a marketing line — it's the whole point. A menu photo is a promise to the customer. If the picture is invented, the box never matches, and everyone loses. So the output is always recognisably the same dish you photographed: same garnish, same plating, same portion — just lit like it deserves. As a photographer, maybe I'm the last person who should say this out loud—I'm not exactly shooting myself in the foot for fun—but the truth is that food photography doesn't belong to photographers alone anymore.
